Can you paint over paint without sanding?
Sanding is often a crucial step for ensuring that your surface is ready to be painted. If you don't have a properly sanded surface, paint may not adhere to certain items properly. You can oversand, undersand and often people underestimate its importance. But, you don't have to be a pro to sand a surface.
Sanding is often a crucial step for ensuring that your surface is ready to be painted. If you don't have a properly sanded surface, paint may not adhere to certain items properly. You can oversand, undersand and often people underestimate its importance. But, you don't have to be a pro to sand a surface.
Literally, I've painted countless pieces of furniture and cabinets over the past 20 years and have RARELY sanded-off the finish before painting. Guess what? If you properly clean the surface and use the correct primer, you can avoid sanding altogether. I promise!
MINERAL PAINT (My Favorite Option)
It'll adhere to just about anything. As an added bonus, Fusion paints are so durable they are waterproof, stain resistant, and don't even require topcoat. I do recommend lightly scuffing the piece, but no heavy sanding is needed for best results!
If you skip out on sanding a dresser before painting and do not complete the other preparatory steps such as cleaning and priming correctly, then the paint may begin to peel away over time. If you use a good bonding primer, and especially if you add a hard-wearing top coat, the paint should last without having to sand.
Can you paint over primer without sanding the car? Technically, yes, you can do that. Some circ*mstances don't require sanding the existing paint and primer before repainting. If you choose this route, the car's surface might show minimal damage like puncture holes, body scratches, dents, and cracks.
You probably don't need a primer. If the current wall is smooth, clean and covered with the same type of paint (both are oil-based for example), you can head straight for the paint. You need to fill holes, spackle and sand*, maybe even cut a new piece of drywall in to the existing wall.
Sanding a surface removes the top glossy layer, allowing the substance to receive the primer. Without sanding the surface in advance, the new coat of paint won't stick to the previous layer. In addition to stripping the outer layer of gloss, you can also use sandpaper to correct imperfections and remove stains.
Your best bet is to use a good layer of primer to ensure a smooth, consistent base layer for the colored paint. In this case, your primer will mask many of the imperfections you're trying to hide. Once that is covered, move on to the next step.
Painting With Minimal or No Sanding
First, you can use a heavy duty primer sealer as a first coat before applying your finish paint. The oil based products, such as Kilz and Zinsser Cover Stain, will stick to anything (even glass), and give a good stable surface for top coating.
Is sanding old paint necessary?
When a surface is already painted and that paint job is completely intact, typically, you can paint over the old surface without sanding first. In these cases, it's important to thoroughly clean the surface of grease, dust, and grime before painting.
Most of the paints Consumer Reports buys and tests are self-priming, and we've found that they work well. “Self-priming paints have improved over the years to the point where you no longer need to prime,” says our paint expert, Rico de Paz.
If the finish is intact and it's a good paint job, go for it and paint away! It if it needs some smoothing out first, give it a light sanding all over to smooth first with 220 grit sandpaper. Or, as in this case with the paint peeling away from the laminate on top… That paint needed to come off.
You can kind of paint a dresser without sanding. Let me explain. If you choose one of the paints I recommend above, you definitely don't need to sand down your entire dresser or remove all of the old paint/finish from it first. All you need to do is sand any rough or peeling spots.
You'll often find tutorials out there that claim you don't need to sand, and there are also lots of primers and paints promising that no sanding is necessary. But from what I've learned over the years, sanding is a must. Be sure to start any painting project by sanding your surfaces with 150-grit sandpaper.
While KILZ ADHESION Primer is formulated to bond without sanding, it is recommended that a small area be tested for adhesion prior to beginning the job.
After the primer dries, lightly sand away bumps and ridges using very fine grit sandpaper folded into quarters. When the grit of one section of sandpaper becomes covered with dust, switch to an unused section and continue. Wipe the wall clean with a damp towel or sponge and allow it to dry before painting.
If the walls have not been repainted in a long time, consider removing the old paint. Repainting over an old and worn-out wall creates several issues. The new paint may not stick to the walls properly, and there is an increased possibility of the newly painted walls developing defects.
With fresh drywall, the substrate actually absorbs a coating really well, like a sponge. However, because it absorbs so well, without a primer coat, you'll experience uneven coverage, especially along drywall seams. This means you'll need to apply more paint to finally get an even coat.
A paint and primer in one is not designed for every project. Some surfaces require specialty primers that block out color, have higher adhesion qualities or handle corroded surfaces. Exterior surfaces such as wood and metal require a primer for proper adhesion and blocking power.
Is Deglosser better than sanding?
If you're working on a piece of furniture with a lot of etched detail, using liquid sandpaper/deglosser may save you a lot of time and provide the best results. Manually sanding your item with sandpaper can be very time-consuming and requires a lot of manual labor, depending on the size of the item you're refurbishing.
The finish coat won't adhere as well and the finish will reflect the lack of sanding with a less than smooth finish. You're not trying to sand off the primer, just giving it some"tooth" and removing imperfections.
Before the new coat of paint is applied, 400-grit paper makes prepping smooth and easy. If there are any rough areas spotted along the surface or edges of a given panel, 400-grit could be used to smooth the metal out in a way that lower grits might be incapable of.
You will want between two and three coats of paint depending on the situation. After the first two coats are applied and dry, take a look to see if the old paint is showing through. You may just need to touch up a few areas, or if lots of paint is showing through, you'll need an entire third coat.
The most effective and long-lasting way to refinish an already-painted item is by stripping it and starting over, rather than layering the new finish on top of the old and getting inconsistent results.
