Can you pour concrete over grass?
Technically you can, but you really shouldn't pour concrete over grass. To maintain its tensile strength, concrete needs to be laid on a firm, even, and dry foundation. Grass and soil will naturally channel moisture into the concrete from below, which will likely result in it cracking over time.
Whether you pour concrete for a walkway or patio, a strong gravel base is required to prevent the concrete from cracking and shifting. Gravel is especially important in clay soil because it doesn't drain well, which results in water pooling under the concrete slab and slowly eroding the soil as it finally drains.
You should not pour concrete directly on the ground before preparing a proper concrete base. The minimum best practice is to thoroughly prepare the ground by leveling and compacting the subgrade. Then add a subbase of gravel for additional load support of the final slab if needed.
In general, it is not advisable to lay slabs directly on top of grass. As with soil, there are a few factors in play that will determine the longevity of slabs laid on grass and in many cases these patios or paths will not stand the test of time.
The Correct Mortar Bed When Laying Paving Slabs On Grass
4:1 is the standard strength, but 5 or 6:1 is also acceptable to allow drainage. Depending on what you are doing to the gaps between your slabs, it may mean one strength of mortar is preferable.
Because concrete is a very porous material, it will absorb any moisture that it contacts. This can cause pooling. Without crushed stone, pooling water will settle under it and erode your slab. Adding a layer of crushed stone will add proper drainage, as well as create a barrier between your slab and the ground.

No, you do not need rebar for a 4-inch slab of concrete on grade. A 4-inch-thick slab cast on the ground and in permanent contact with it will float and rebar is not required. Rebar is recommended on concrete measuring 5 – 6 inches thick.
What Material is Used for a Slab Base? The base in concrete construction is usually a form of crushed stone. Most concrete contractors want a mix of coarse and fine aggregate to create a compactable base that is going to be safe for settlement and drainage.
Working With Ready-Mix Concrete
And, if you mix it yourself, it's the cheapest way to make your slab. For most do-it-yourselfers, the best material for building a concrete slab is a ready-mix, crack-resistant concrete product. The wet mix is poured into a prepared wood form, then left to cure.
Why put sand under concrete?
The simple answer is to prevent the concrete from cracking and breaking.
If you have a concrete floor in continuous contact with a source of moisture, you will have problems. This is why a vapor barrier under concrete is essential. Vapor barriers are a way to keep moisture from getting into the concrete.
Reinforcement should also be placed low enough so saw cutting does not cut the reinforcement. For welded wire reinforcement, the Wire Reinforcement Institute recommends steel placement 2 inches below the surface or within the upper third of the slab thickness, whichever is closer to the surface.
If the grass is patchy or thin, or if there are a lot of weeds, it may be easier and more cost-effective to start from scratch and install a new paver walkway or patio. If the grass is healthy and you want to keep it, you will need to remove the sod and excavate the soil down to the level of the pavers.

The best sub-base for a concrete slab is gravel. The soil has to be prepped first before the gravel can be laid down; pouring concrete directly onto rock is not considered a best practice. You can use different kinds of gravel for the subbase as long as it is clean and uniform in shape and size.
However, in most cases a foam underlay will be all that's needed to go under your grass. Before this is installed, we strongly recommend thoroughly cleaning the concrete so the artificial grass adhesive will properly bond with the concrete. It's also a good idea to remove moss and weeds.
It is important to have an even surface to pour your concrete sidewalk onto. You can rent a plate compactor to pack the soil and remove any uneven surfaces. This provides added stability to the walkway when it's finished. Then, lay down 4 inches of gravel so you're able to fill the other 4 inches with your concrete.
