Do socks go over shin guards?
Your socks don't just cover your shin guards, but help keep them in place as well. You'll want a sock that is snug on your leg, but also not so tight that it cuts off your circulation. Pull your socks all the way up to make sure they're snug enough.
While you could wear your shin guards over your socks it is a requirement in most leagues to wear them under the socks. It is important to cover your shin guard with soccer socks because the plastic and other materials in the shin pads could cut or injure you or someone else.
You'll want your shin guards to cover most of the area between your ankle and knee. Shin guards should fit snugly and be at least 2" below the knee.
Different people have various ways of wearing shin guards. However, some of the most convenient steps for how to wear shin guards with pants are specified below. Shin guards are to be worn under the socks. So, push your shin guard up and past your ankle and shin.
Players may wear two pairs of socks as the double layer may help to prevent blisters. Simply take a second pair of socks and wear it over your shin guard and first pair of socks. The second pair of socks must be the right size to both accommodate the first layer and not be too large that it slides.
Shin guards should be flush against your leg, on both sides and the top and bottom. You should have about four fingers of space below the knee and two fingers of space above the ankle of your flexed foot.
Slip-in shin guards that go under your socks are unusually more lightweight. They won't restrict your movement or make your legs feel fatigued. Most soccer players prefer wearing shin guards that they can slip on because they provide more motion.
Ankle shin guards are the standard and recommended choice for youth players. They offer an ideal balance of protection against kicks and impacts, while still allowing for adequate movement.
The compression sleeves hold shinguards in place without tape and help to reduce cramping and fatigue.
Younger players typically wear shin guards with included ankle protection. These go on first, and then you pull the sock on over them, and the cleats go on last. Slip-in guards go inside socks—put the socks and cleats on first, and then put the guard on and pull the sock up over it.
How high are soccer socks supposed to be?
The length of soccer socks are designed to come up to your knee at the very least. You can always roll, fold, or tuck your soccer sock to your prefered height on your leg.
The two most important differences between shin guards vs. shin pads are the athlete's comfort and more robust protection due to its fit.

There is some science behind it. The socks worn are made by Trusox and have taken the football world by storm after being endorsed by Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez, among others. Trusox are designed to limit the amount your foot slips about inside your boot, especially when put under extreme pressure.
It is generally advised that shin guards are worn by anyone who plays in a five-a-side football match. Indeed, some competition organisers will insist that players wear them, so you should check competition rules.
If you're wearing soccer pants with a lining or flap, fold them over the shin guards to help hold them in place. If you're wearing shorts, you may need to use tape or a band to secure the shin guards in place. It's important to ensure that the shin guards are properly positioned and secure before you start playing.
It turns out, having holey socks isn't a footballer wardrobe malfunction. It's serves a very clever purpose. To avoid a possible injury, some players cut holes in their socks in order to relieve pressure.
Shin guards are important pieces of equipment that protect you from lower leg injuries while playing soccer. One of the most common questions that people have about shin guards is whether or not they go under or over socks. Shin guards go under a player's socks.
In a proper fit, there won't be any gaps between the skate and the shin guard. If the shin guards are too small, you'll see a gap between the skate and the angle, or notice your calf isn't fully protected. If they're too big, the shin guards will wobble, feel loose, and your knee may sit above or below the donut.
Size (in inches) | Manufacturer | |
---|---|---|
S | 4′ 7″ | 5′ 5″ – 5′ 7 1/2″ |
M | 5″ 3″ | 5′ 7 1/2″ – 5′ 10″ |
L | 5′ 11″ | 5′ 10″ or taller |
XL | 6′ 3″ |
Put your sock over the shin guards.
Your socks don't just cover your shin guards, but help keep them in place as well. You'll want a sock that is snug on your leg, but also not so tight that it cuts off your circulation. Pull your socks all the way up to make sure they're snug enough.
Do shin guards need to be washed?
How Often Should You Wash? Washing your shin guards after every use isn't necessary. If you play or practice regularly, a wash once a month should do just fine. With that said, there is something you can do after every practice or game to help keep your guards fresh: take them out of your bag.
First, put on the long socks and pull them all the way up. They usually are long enough to go up the thigh! What is this? Then, you are going to put on the shin guards over the sock.
In the sports industry, specifically football in this case Electrical Tape is known as Sock Tape. Every kit bag needs a roll of Sock Tape as they are essential to keeping your shin guards/pads and socks in position. Sock Tape tends to be wrapped around the ankle and the upper calf to secure both socks and shin pads.
How to wear grip socks? Since each team has its official socks, many players resort to cutting the lower bit of their official socks. This exposes the grip socks to the sole of the shoe, and they can wear their official socks over it. Some players use tape to put the two together, so the grip socks are not exposed.
Shin guards, to put it bluntly, can get really nasty. They absorb sweat, dirt, and sometimes blood, and there's a good chance that smell means they've never, ever been washed. That doesn't need to be the case, though. Here are some tips for deodorizing even the rankest shin guards.
Decrease pain — While compression socks can help reduce swelling and inflammation related to shin splints, they can also reduce related feelings of stiffness and tenderness. Their gradient pressure gradually supports and releases tension in the muscles along the top of your calf to your foot, limiting discomfort.
Soccer socks can go above a player's knees. The socks soccer players wear are usually quite long and can be pulled above the knees. However, this is a matter of personal preference. There is nothing in the rules of soccer that require this.
If you wear an orthosis or brace on your feet, ankles or knees, you need to wear some sort of sock underneath it. The sock protects your skin, keeps your skin dry and helps prevent blisters or sores. For the best protection, wear a sock that extends past the top of your brace.
According to FIFA rules, shin guards must be worn, and they must be covered. This is where shin guard sleeves come in. Shin guard sleeves cover shin guards and, due to their compression, also keep shin guards in place.
1. Tape. Take some tape (athletic tape is best but any will do the job) and wrap a piece of it around your leg on the outside of the sock just under where the shin pads sits and just above it as well.
Do calf sleeves prevent shin splints?
Wearing specially designed athletic wear can also help prevent injuries. A calf compression sleeve adds another layer of support for your legs. By compressing your calves and shins, compression sleeves increase oxygen and blood flow to the areas most susceptible to shin splints and related injuries.
So if you're feeling sore from long runs or you need to recover quicker, then wearing compression gear is for you. If you are experiencing shin pain, using compression during your run will help minimize some of the muscle movement and alleviate some of that shin pain.
The best way to remember which shin guard goes on which leg is this: If the two shin guards are identical then it doesn't matter which leg they go on. If one side of the shin guard is taller than the other, then place the tall side on the outside of your leg.
Shin splints are a common injury, particularly for people who run and who rapidly increase their activity levels. Wearing shoes with an optimal mix of cushioning, support, and stability can help prevent shin splints.
Wearing running shoes that don't provide the necessary cushioning and support to absorb all of that impact is one of the main causes of shin splints when running. You should also aim to replace your running shoes after every 400-500 miles.
Ankle shin guards are more protective and are often recommended for younger players. As a defender, I have been kicked in the ankle enough times in my game experience that I also prefer them. Even as an adult player. They are padded on both sides of the ankle to keep it safe.
Their socks must completely cover their shin guards. Soccer socks should be tight enough so that they won't fall down during the match, but some players put tape around the top of the sock to help stop the socks from falling down.
Wearing knee socks keeps you warmer.
If your legs and feet get cold easily or you hate to feel a draft beneath your dress, knee socks are a must. This sock length sits above the calf but below the knee, so it keeps you warmer than shorter socks because it covers more skin.
We tend to think of soccer socks as usually coming up to just below the knee, so it can look aesthetically jarring when they're either longer or shorter than that. They're traditionally meant to be worn folded over at the top and often have a contrasting top called a turnover.
Shinguards should fit from just above the bend of your ankle when you flex your foot to a couple of inches below the knee.
Does Messi wear shin pads?
What Shin Guards Does Messi Wear? Like Cristiano Ronaldo, the boots Lionel Messi wears are dictated to him somewhat by his sponsors, Adidas. In the past Messi has worn camouflaged shin guards by Adidas and its safe to assume that he wears either Adidas Predator or Adidas X Pro Shin Guards.
All soccer organizations from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and even Sunday league organizations all state that shin guards are mandatory. Soccer players must wear them. And this is for a good reason.
Quarter socks are often called shorty socks, anklets or just ankle socks, but compared to the shorter low-cut ankle sock, they are on the longer side. A quarter sock is about half the length of a crew sock — if you think of knee socks as 100% leg coverage and crew socks as 50%, quarter socks are 25% — so, a quarter!
How to wear grip socks? Since each team has its official socks, many players resort to cutting the lower bit of their official socks. This exposes the grip socks to the sole of the shoe, and they can wear their official socks over it. Some players use tape to put the two together, so the grip socks are not exposed.
Shin guards are worn under the socks, so don't put them on yet. Position the shin guards correctly. Make sure they are centered on your shin, not off to the side. They should protect from your ankle to below your knee.
Professional footballers use long socks pulling up over their calves because it keeps their leg muscles warm, and also to help keep their shin guards in place. While they are incredibly useful, they can also be quite tight and restrictive – which can cause problems with effective blood flow and circulation.
These sports bras are officially called the GPS tracker vest and are very common among male footballers. According to experts, modern players in the game wear it in order to read their GPS data. The vest has a GPS device connected to it which helps the experts understand the GPS readings of the player.
It's a good idea to wear soccer shin guards with socks. However, the socks you wear are your choice. Some soccer players like ankle socks, while others prefer long shin socks that cover their calves and go up to the knees. Full-length socks are best for shin guards with no straps.
