Can you build a ramp over stairs?
A concrete ramp can be a built over stairs or in addition to your existing stairs, and while the concrete may not require much long-term maintenance. There is a lot of time and energy spent in the building of the ramp. A metal ramp is the best all-around plan when building a ramp over existing stairs.

- Ramps should be 36 inches wide at minimum to accommodate a wheelchair.
- Ramps should have a running slope no steeper than 1:12, meaning there should be no more than 1 inch of rise for every 12 inches of length.
- The rise for any ramp run should be 30 inches maximum.
Step ramp: Not steeper than 1:10 and not longer than 1900mm - often used to replace a step. Threshold ramp: Not steeper than 1:8 and not longer than 280mm - often used at a doorway. Kerb ramp: Not steeper than 1:8 and not longer than 1520mm - often used at a road crossing point.
The price for a concrete ramp is $200 to $250 per linear foot. Concrete ramps require additional labor to pour the concrete.
If the slope of a ramp is between 1:12 and 1:16, the maximum rise shall be 30 inches (760 mm) and the maximum horizontal run shall be 30 feet (9 m). If the slope of the ramp is between 1:16 and 1:20, the maximum rise shall be 30 inches (760 mm) and the maximum horizontal run shall be 40 feet (12 m).
The maximum recommended slope of ramps is 1:20. Steeper slopes may be allowed in special cases depending on the length to be covered (fig. 4). Ramps should be provided with landings for resting, maneuvering and avoiding excessive speed.
The ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] recommends 1 foot for ramp for every one inch of rise.
Elderly people may prefer ramps over stairs for several reasons. Walking on a ramp requires less leg extensor power and less joint rotation than negotiating stairs. Gait patterns employed on ramps are similar to those used on a level surface, while gait patterns associated with stairs are different.
Slope expressed as a percentage = (h/d) x 100
An existing ramp of 1 meter in height with a horizontal distance of 10 meters, will have a slope of 10%.
What can I use instead of a wheelchair ramp?
A platform lift provides a vertically rising and descending landing that transports a person from one level to another. Platform lifts work for people either with or without a wheelchair. They are often used to get up onto a deck or porch.
This means that for every 1 inch of rise, 12 inches of ramp are required. For example, if an entryway is 36 inches high, you will need a ramp that is at least 36 feet long. The 1:12 slope ratio reduces the steepness of a ramp to 5 degrees of incline and makes it both easier and safer to traverse.
Unless you're constructing a temporary ramp that will sit on the surface of the ground, you'll need to dig to install the concrete footings that will support the ramp's vertical posts.
The five types of ramps are threshold ramps, portable/folding ramps, suitcase ramps, permanent ramps, and modular ramps.
Are there any regulations on gradient? There are regulatory guidelines surrounding permanent ramps which suggest a 1:15 gradient e.g. 15 inches of length for every inch of rise.

There are many benefits to adding a wheelchair ramp to your home, including potentially increased resale value. Potential buyers who need an accessible home would like yours. However, some buyers may view the modifications negatively.
The labor costs for building a wheelchair ramp can vary significantly depending on the project's complexity, the material used, and the size of the ramp. For simpler projects with a basic wooden ramp with no extra features, labor costs can range from $50 to $500 per linear foot.
Galileo used inclined planes to study motion. As ramp angle increases, the distance traveled in one second increases. This means the ball moves faster on the steeper ramps.
How long should a ramp be to height?
The equation is very simple! When choosing a portable access ramp take the vertical measurement from ground level to door and multiply by 6 to get the correct ramp length. For example, if your threshold height is 15cm, then your ramp will need to be 90cm (3ft) long (15 x 6 = 90).

About 1/4" per foot is good. Whether to do a steep ramp or steps depends somewhat on who will be using the walkway. For wheelchair use, of course, you can't have steps. Wheelchair ramps can be no steeper than 1:12, with 1:20 being preferred. But for people walking, steps are often safer.
With a slope less than 5% it is not considered a ramp and therefore does not need handrails.
For a ramp the maximum running slope allowed is 1:12. That means for every inch of height change there should be at least 12 inches of ramp run.
Determining Ramp Length:
Measure total rise (how many inches from lower level to upper level) and divide by the slope.
The height of a ramp affects how far a vehicle with wheels will go and how fast the vehicle will travel. For example, the higher the ramp, the faster and further a vehicle will go.
Ramp runs must have a clear width of 36″ minimum (measured between handrails where provided).
A steep ramp increases the likelihood of tipping backwards and also requires more energy to climb—ramps like this pose a great danger to anyone who uses them. Slope, or the degree of incline of a ramp, plays a crucial role in its design and usefulness.
Cost. Staircases are considered the most economical choice when creating access to a raised area of a home.
What is the safest way for elderly to go down stairs?
Use your other hand to support the elder as they start climbing the stairs. Ask the elder to climb up or go down one stair at a time, starting with their weaker leg first, then the stronger one, followed by the cane. All three should be on each step before climbing the next one.
Angle of slope represents the angle that's formed between the run (remember it's an idealized flat surface that ignores elevation change) and your climb's angular deviation from that idealized flat surface. To calculate this, you divide the rise divided by the run, and then obtain the inverse tangent of the result.
Rise to run ratio
It can be expressed in a few different notations: 1 : 8 1:8 1:8, 1 / 8 1/8 1/8, 1 in 8, e.g., for example, with a 1 : 12 1:12 1:12 ratio, for each unit of vertical rise, you need to have 12 units of horizontal run, so 1 inch of rise means that 12 inches ( 1 foot) of horizontal space is needed.
Never go over the wheelchair and pull it up on upward ramps. Never push a wheelchair down the ramp with the occupant facing the lower end. When going downwards on a ramp, use your legs and not your back to balance out the wheelchair.
A concrete ramp is another type of ramp solution and requires little maintenance. Steel or aluminum can be used for construction, too, but using lumber for ramps is the most common option. Like a deck, ramps made from pressure treated wood are sturdy and resilient when properly built and maintained.
While all types of ramps have their pros and cons, an aluminum ramp is an appropriate choice for most permanent and temporary applications. They are easy to install, low-maintenance, durable, and easy to remove or relocate. In addition, a qualified aluminum ramp provider is likely available in your area.
Calculating ADA Ramp Slope
The ADA provides good direction about ratios for wheelchair ramp slopes. The commercial and public facility standard for slope is 1:12 (in inches) or about 5 degrees of incline. For those building ramps at home, the ratio can be as steep as 3:12 or almost 15 degrees.

An ADA compliant ramp will have adhere to a rise-over-run ratio of 1:12. That is for every inch in rise there will be a foot of ramp.
CONSTRUCTION NOTES A level landing section must be used between ramps when the direction of the sections change. A typical landing is 4' X 4' of 2X6 material. After you have laid the plans for your ramp, you can prefab the sections. This makes the Job go quickly with few errors.
Why do wheelchair ramps have bumps?
Inspired by Braille, the flat-top bumps or blisters on the pads warn people who experience limited vision or mobility that they are leaving a sidewalk and entering a street or parking lot. Defining this edge is an important part of providing an environment in which all people can move freely on public sidewalks.
Step ramp: like a kerb ramp but not attached to a kerb. It might assist someone to ascend a small step (no more than 190mm) in a store but can't be longer than 1900mm or steeper than 1:10. It must have a slip resistant surface. Threshold ramp: a short slip resistant ramp which allows access to a doorway.
Using the slope requirements listed above, find the appropriate length of your ramp based on the height of your deck from the ground. With your length decided, plan out the positioning of your support posts. Support posts should be spaced no more than 8 feet apart.

Staircases are considered the most economical choice when creating access to a raised area of a home.
A number of reasons, but primarily two: space constraints and comfort. Stairs can be much steeper than ramps while still remaining comfortable to use. Imagine your typical staircase inside, let's say, an apartment building.
PROPER RAMP FOUNDATION IS ONE OF THE KEY ELEMENTS OF BUILDING A LONG LASTING RAMP. We strongly recommend building your ramp on an elevated foundation. This will allow for any rain water to flow freely underneath the ramp and will increase airflow to help keep your ramp structure dry and prevent rotting/decay.
Ramps having slopes steeper than 1:20 require handrails. Ramps with a rise greater than 6” require handrails. Handrails must be 34” - 38” in height measured above the walking surface.
The maximum recommended slope of ramps is 1:20.
